JINGLES

Many things remind us of radio listening in the past: the types of radios we used, programs and/or personalities we enjoyed, a favourite station, a contest, a commercial, a hit song - even a non hit!

Yet none of these conjure up the 'feel' of yesteryear quite like a station ID jingle. It's fair to say the Golden Age for ID jingles has passed us by.

-
The following eight segments are not jingles but they form a wonderful archival tribute to the little fella with the big voice: Jim Angel. He was once Sydney’s longest serving news reader on commercial radio (2SM, 2UE, 2GB, 2CH) and more lately in residence hosting the breakfast show at 101.7 Highland FM in NSW.

But now he’s gone. Jim died suddenly at Christmas. Here is not the place to eulogise this favourite news broadcaster of many. Instead, as a mark of respect to him and his family, just listen in to a collection of moments from his remarkable 24 year stint with 2SM.

2SM News 1986
Our first segment comes from a Jon Vidler aircheck during the ‘2SM Stereo’ era circa 1986, where we hear Jim read with a complete bulletin.

2SM News 1975
Unfortunately I’m unable to source a complete bulletin of Jim reading in the 2SM reverb era which peaked around 1974-75. So here at least is the powerful drum/horn intro, the lead item and the weather. Short, as it is, this will rekindle many memories. “Ahead of More Music and Laurie Bennett, Sydney’s weather …..”

Recording with thanks to John Graska

Blooper
In a career as long as Jim’s there’s been more than a few bloopers but not many made them onto tape. This is more a Ron E Sparks error, but Jim’s mis-cueing of Ron’s report from the Sunbury Rock Festival resulted in red faces and a laugh or two when it went to air in 1973.

Recording with thanks to Gregg Sinclair.

2SM's Top 100 Hits of 1972
2SM fans will remember it was customary for many years for the station to use New Year’s Day as a special countdown of the top hits and news of the previous year. On 1 Jan 1973 popular night jock Graham ‘Robbo’ Roberts (later of 4IP and 4BC) was joined by Jim for a hour of hits ‘n’ memories as part of the Top 100 Hits of 1972.

2SM aircheck 1968
Don’t blink – or sneeze – you’ll miss it. Just one, small back announce from when Jim hosted the Sunday evening show on 2SM during 1967/68. Er, is that reverb I hear?

27 Dec 2007

News excerpt 1972
An excerpt from a bulletin that aired the day after Gough Whitlam won government in December 1972. After the obligatory commercial break you’ll hear surf and weather reporter Bob Evans doing his thing on the 2SM ‘Beach Bureau’.

Recording with thanks to John Graska.

2SM aircheck 1969
A rare piece featuring a Sunday afternoon handover between DJs Mad Mel and Brian Proud. The mighty Jimmy is heard with the hourly news and a later update.

2SM had recently returned to all-music programming under Rod Muir. Note the reverb!! Brian, however, didn’t last the distance as a latter-day Good Guy. Many will recall him as the B-I-G promo voice for Channel Ten Sydney in the ’70s. I saw him recently flogging wares to retirees on an info-mercial.

Recording with thanks to John Thompson, one of the NEWUW 11-10 Men.

2SM News Patrol 1964
The presentation style of this rare segment sounds much older than 1964 to my ear, but here it is.

News Patrol was a small group of 2SM reporters led by Garvin Rutherford. Their task was to move among the people of Sydney gathering background and interviews on whatever was happening: from a movie star arriving at Mascot through to traffic reports direct-to-air from the red 2SM VW Beetles.

This is one of Jim's first radio assignments conducting an interview about an international toy fair. The presentation voice you'll hear is John Mahon who was 2SM's morning Good Guy back in '64.

3UZ, Fun Radio
3UZ was argubaly the greatest Australian radio station of the sixties. It's held in high regard by those who were part of it and who listened to it. I grew up in Sydney and missed all the excitement. However, I've since heard airchecks that help me understand why UZ was such a powerhouse. Top line talent and management, a consisitent high standard of presentation and a strong promotional presence in the marketplace assured its success.

As Melbourne's first Top 40 station in 1958, jingles were vital to the UZ sound. What is strange is that contemporary pop music on the radio in the '60s sounds completely at odds with these jingles. This package was strictly out of Jazz and Big Band land (weren't they all back then!!), but it was part of the sound forever associated with The Greater 3UZ at its peak.

The package ran from 1964 to '69 and was produced by in Los Angeles by SANDE and GREENE. Note: the 'swinging' 2 minute instrumental bed. This was often used as a filler up to news, but never in a sloppy, fade-it-out kind of way. It was always backtimed so that it ended cold at the pips. Presenatation: that was always the key. The UZ difference.

*Trivia. I'm told that when this package arrived in Melbourne the American vocalists had sung '3U Zee' on the original tape. Now wouldn't THAT be a collectors item! I assume the tape was returned to the US and never seen or heard of again. Runs 4.30, file size approx 4mb.

Color Radio
Three small stations in regional Queensland took on the Color Radio mantle in 1964. Note the US spelling as it appeared from the original Color Radio station KFWB Los Angeles. The stations, 4IP Ipswich, 4LG Longreach and 4LM Mt Isa successfully transplanted their brand of 'Color' across the state in the '60s and '70s.

As with small groups of co-owned stations, e.g. 2UE and 2KO, it made economic sense to buy one jingle package for all. And that's what we have here from 1970 when the Color Radio group changed their DJs from Sound Guys to Good Guys.

This custom package from PAMS is mostly accapella but with some brass riffs and moog stings for enhancement. Of particular interest is the jock shouts. You'll hear one right at the end for a 'Mr X'. As the story goes, a crude photocopy of the annoucers' roster was sent (by mail - not email) to Dallas indicating which names were required. 4IP were in the process of hiring a yet-to-be named overnight jock. His slot was listed on the roster as Mr X. And what did the PAMS singers sing? Check it out. Runs 1.45, file size approx 2mb.

Long Live Music, DB Music
In response to requests for 3DB material here's what I uncovered from their notable 'DB Music' era in the seventies.

The format premiered in Sept 1975. The jingles from this first package remained on air for the best part of three years. Old airchecks indicate the original set of cuts were supplemented by newer recordings over time but often some earlier tracks were played then rested and returned.

This selection features the main theme from the launch: 'Long Live Music'. A lead male and female vocal were used on the session, the female being Chelsea Brown popular at the time on TV's Celebrity Squares and in a short role on Number 96. Some of the interesting cuts to listen for are; the two ABBA sound-a-likes and the long cut right at the end based on the 1974 Reunion song "Life is a Rock (and the Radio Rolled Me)". Reunion were a US studio creation whose lead vocalist, Joey Levine, was the voice of that bubblegum classic "Yummy Yummy Yummy".

The only other thing I can add about these jingles is that they turned up on 2GZ, 5AD, 6PR and possibly 7HT (but can't confirm that). If anyone has the 5AD versions, 'AD Music', I'd be pleased to hear from you. Also, if any Melbourne listeners and/or former DB people can provide further background on DB Music jingles from 1975 to 1980 I like to hear from you too. Runs 5 mins, file size aprox 5mb.

6PR We've Got You...
Here some of the 6PR versions of the 'Long Live Music' package. I'm told these were on air in Perth around 1977 which is the time the station was in metamorphosis from all-music to more sport and talk. That shift took a few years to completely roll out, but it built the foundation that 6PR sits upon today.

Of interest with these cuts is the shorter transitional versions with a country flavour for music segue ways; fast to slow, slow to fast, etc. And listen once more to the "Life is a Rock..." track. Whereas DB stuck with the one version using artist names, PR cleverly did four versions, featuring all artists, all sport, all summer/water locations then a combo track.

Great jingles, but from what I can gather they weren't used for long. Perhaps a keen seventies Perth listener can shed light on this. Runs 2.20, file size approx 2mb.

100 DB Music
Why 100? As noted in "DTTD" Australian AM stations changed from 10 kilohertz separation to 9 kilohertz in late 1978. In many cases this caused a flurry of stations updating their jingles. I can't be sure that this DB package was recorded then. My memory is that they were done later the following year. Whatever…the thing that did change on the station was the cessation of the '1030 DB Music' ident to '100 DB Music' because they moved to 1026 KHz.

What I think is noteworthy about these jingles is; (a) their length and (B) their style. The package featured longer song-style cuts with supplementary 1/2 and 1/4 time edits. Only the full versions are included here. There were a few specific 'shorties' in the package and you'll hear them towards the end of the medley.

Formatically I'm not a huge fan of long jingles. As a PD I was doubtful about their value in terms of ramming home pure station identification. However, when jingles feature skilled arrangements and a quality of playing and singing, like these, it's hard not to appreciate them.

Although not remembered as a classic this is one of the better Australian produced works of its time. They were recorded at AAV in Melbourne and must have cost a bomb. Who did them? I wish I knew. Anyone? Runs 7.30, file size approx 7mb.

The Jingle Package for the Eighties
A somewhat unorthodox yet inventive package produced in mid 1979 by Magnolia Music of Sydney. Most of the package uses synthesised band tracks and a Vocoder treatment on vocals. I understand Magnolia (who did the first 2WS package in 1978) was commissioned by 2SM for this new sound. To cut corners at the vocal session several call signs were sung: 2SM, 2NX, 3XY, 4IP and 6PM. Nice idea, but the package was rejected by IP and PM never making it on air in Brisbane and Perth. 2NX used them for a while, ditto 3XY but only briefly. Newly appointed PD Graham Smith hated them.

Note: each station reel opens with an mildly amusing tape ident just for that station done though the vocoder. They're included here. Also pay attention to the news theme which comes at the end of the medley. It was structured with a six second intro enabling the pips to drift across the start of the theme. Mind you, 2UW did the same thing a year earlier. Not much is original in radio.

I've cobbled together a collection of all the main cuts using a combination of the 2SM and rare 4IP and 6PM versions. What about 3XY? Rumour has it the jingles were so unpopular in Melbourne, the tape was burnt and/or hurled in the in the garbage. Who knows? Maybe it's out there somewhere.

For what it's worth I've always thought of these jingles as 'just plain weird' but whenever I hear them on an old aircheck I'm instantly transported back to the 'new' music of 1979/80…just before FM started. Runs 4.30, file size approx 4mb.

The Rock of Ages EON fm
…and speaking of FM, let's travel back to 92.3 Mhz when it was occupied by Melbourne rock house EON. Like all of the original commercial FMs of 1980, EON spent the first year or two 'finding themesleves'. The result: a strong and fondly remembered image that was The Rock of Ages.

This set of jingles was produced by Andy Wiltshire, who not long before did the "Music in Your Head" package for 3KZ. See them below. Thanks to Andy for hanging on to some of his great jingle work. Thanks also to Justin Drexall and others who have suggested we feature something from the old EON which, since November 1988 was rebadged 3MMM. Runs 3 mins, file size approx 3mb.

Sydney 95 2UE
Since introducing Top 40 to Australian radio in 1958 2UE has been well-endowed with quality jingles, mostly from the US. This huge package known as “Listen to Your City” is no exception. It’s one of the grand thematic packages produced in the late ’70s by TM of Dallas. You’ll notice how odd it sounds now with all those American accents coming through. However, the musicianship and lush string/horn arrangements are outstanding and fitted well with 2UE of the time. These aired in the late ’70s about the time of UE’s blue, running-writing logo.

The package includes several 60 second themes – mini songs if you like - with 30, 15, 10 and 5 second mix outs. Here is some of the various themes but in differing lengths. Towards the end (about the 5.20 mark) you’ll hear all of the shorter general ID jingles with the line: ‘Sydney 95 2UE’. Runs 7.00, file size approx 7mb.

You - Me, 4BC
Here’s a custom package from Ian Mason circa 1979-80. To the best of my knowledge no one else picked up these jingles however, 4IP and 2CC also engaged Mason to produce their custom packages at this time. The packages of IP and CC sounded a lot like these for 4BC. This bunch contains a mix of seasonal and daypart cuts so often a feature of the Mason packages. At the end is the pacey news theme also heard on 2CA from about ’79 to ’81. Runs 4.00, file size approx 4mb.

Living in the City, various Digamae stations
In 1975 the Digamae programming consultancy was at its peak with five top rating city stations on its books. Also in June of ’75 a ruling from FARB came into force banning commercial stations using jingles from overseas. This short-term ban was designed to give local musicians and writers a chance to create product without competition from the US who – let’s face it – had a whole jingle industry operating out of Dallas servicing thousands of stations worldwide.

This all-Australian package, sometimes called the Kerrie Biddell jingles (she was one of four singers on the session), was designed for 2SM, 2NX, 3XY, 4IP and 6PM. By 1977 when those stations had all but finished with it, the package was picked up by the AWA Network for their regional stations 2AY, 2GF, 2GN, 3BO, 4CA, 4TO and 7LA.

This medley represents all the basic cuts plus some mix variations on a few. Note the last two cuts. The instrumental of these became a popular news theme. Runs 3.00, file size approx 3mb.

3KZ
Last month correspondent Geoff Brown mentioned a few packages used by this once top rating Melbourne station, though I hasten to add they weren’t doing too flash when these packages aired.

First in the medley is “We’re with You” a fairly short, low budget set from 1978 by Mike Brady. Two singers are featured. The male sounds quite like John Farnham to my ear however, as the ever-alert Geoff advises it's actually Peter Cupples - session man extraordinaire and one time front man with the band Stylus. The female is possibly Linda George. She was Melbourne's top on-call singer for jingles around this time, certainly for Brady, who used her on several 3MP packages.

The second package from 1980 is called “The Music in Your Head” created by Andy Wiltshire. This package was based on a 60 second main theme with 30 and 15 second mix-outs, both male and female leads. Like most other packages of the time there was a selection of cuts for all occasions: medium tempo, rock, country, ballad, bluesy and reggae. Runs 5.00, file size approx 5mb.

PS. Now that these KZ packages are up on the Macsite I expect I'll get an email any day now from KZ's number fan, David Oaten, requesting some of their work from the '60s. Onya Davo!

2SM - City of the Sun
Another package ‘by request’. According to correspondent Len Carter these were used by 4BH, 2KO and 2SM. That could well be the case because representatives of the American company marketing the packages were touring Australia in the ’60s. However; I only have the SM versions which were used during their early talkback years of 1967-68.

City of the Sun is by PAMS of Dallas, a superbly crafted a Capella package originally designed as Valley of the Sun for a station(name?) in Arizona. These jingles now sound dreadfully old-fashioned but one can’t help but be impressed by the vocal skill of the star singers from the PAMS stable. In particular listen for the rumbling male bass. Also notice the batch of segment intros: everything from time calls to souvenir sounds, even shark patrol and that legendary 2SM talk back and contest phone number 29-82-41. The medley concludes with a non-musical promo and/or time-out bed; just wonderful vocal gymnastics here. Runs 3.00, file size approx 3mb.

06 Jul 2007

3XY - Rocks Melbourne
From Melbourne comes one of the superb Australian rock packages by Ian Mason. This is the actual demo medley nailed together at 3XY - probably by Nigel Haines - to sell the jingles into other markets and to hand around to the XY jocks (on cassette!!) to get them used to how it all sounded.

Like much of Mason's work it's an extensive package covering longer seasonal and suburban cuts, shorter ones, acapellas, cuts for the footy and Moomba even individual mini songs for the jocks: Gavin Wood, Hans (Torv) and Barry (Bissell), Greg Smith, Greg Evans, Garry Suprain, John Peters, Chris Maxwell, Frank Fursey, Mike Andrew and Paul Holmes.

The package was commissioned in 1980 by PD Graham Smith and was later remixed for 2NX/2NM and a few cuts ended up on 7EX Launceston. I've just been told they were also on 2XL Cooma for a while...(ta Pete). It's a long medley but well worth the download time. Special thanks to Barry Anderson formerly of Wagga who found these on an old reel and gave them to me many moons ago. Where are you Barry? Runs 7.15, file size approx 7mb.

2UW
This popular UW package, known as 'Phase II', is by TM Productions of Dallas. These were launched on the Australia Day weekend of 1971 to coincide with a new look and feel for the station under PD Ray Bean. 'Phase II' was heard until 1973. However, upon the arrival of Ken Sparkes as PD in 1977 it was momentarily reinstated during his term.

The package was also heard in Perth on 6PR, in Newcastle on 2HD and for a very brief period on The Greater 3UZ circa '72. For some reason they just didn't cut it on 'The Greater'. Runs 1.00, file size approx 1mb.

01 Jun 2007

4BH
This package by PAMS of Dallas aired here around 1966/67 and was based on a tune by the Ray Conniff Singers "Happiness Is". The song itself was used in the USA to advertise Kent cigarettes. As a radio ID package "Happiness Is" first appeared on Top 40 giant WABC New York. In fact many of the classic PAMS packges were done first for WABC then re-sung for stations elsewhere, e.g. 2SM and 2UE were among the big Aust users of PAMS product in the '60s.

Included here are three ids for ex BH personalities who have since gone to that great studio in the sky namely: Geoff Bradley, Grahame Cherry, John Taylor and a further three - different sounding tracks - for those ex BH folk still with us: John Daley, John Kerr, Ken Guy.

And because it's birthday time at BH (75 this year), let's throw in a few bonus ID tracks from their Beautiful Music days in the late '70s, all but one features the brilliant voice of Mr Foxtel, Paul Ricketts. Runs 4.45, file size approx 5mb.

2CA - Playing Your All Time Favourites
It's a matter of history that 2CC rated its arse off in Canberra from the day it was opened by Gough Whitlam in 1975 and right through until the early '90s. Its then owners, ARN, began to network on it. Remember Classic Gold? What a crock! But in 1984 2CA (then a Macquarie Network station) fought back with their strongest effort on record.

Although CA never toppled the once-great CC, they picked up their act considerably with one of Australia's first *all-gold formats. A brave move for a station in a smaller city market. Here's the package they used to launch the All Time Favourites in those Solid Gold days of the mid-'80s. Runs 3.30, file size approx 4mb.

Geoff Brown reports: Greg St John (formerly GM 2CA-Macquarie) tells me the jingle package was done by Brian King (keyboards player in The Executives). The Gold format was originally put in by Sam Galea, which Greg tweaked when he was PD.

By the way, 3KZ's all *Gold format was launched in 1979... before 2CA. It was changed a bit when Les Heil came back, and Rhett Walker went in as consultant. Ian Major was GM at the time, I was PD. Wish I still had the jingles. Like the ones "Melbourne Is..." package. It was done by Mike Brady.

PAMS custom IDs for 2SM, 3XY, 2NX, 2NM
From 1971 and for the remainder of the decade these four stations were virtually joined at the hip when it came to jingles. This was due to their membership of the Digamae progamming consultancy. Rather than repeat the same jingle tracks over and over for each station, here's a medley using cuts firstly from 2SM's PAMS custom ID package 1970/71. The package was themed: 'Sound of the 70s'. You'll also hear some later versions of the same package with '3XY' edited in.

Following a pause, comes the first joint package for the four stations. These are basically acapella with various stings and stabs added for contrast. They too were recorded at PAMS and premeired on New Years Day 1972. Both of the custom packages featured DJ cuts used in the hourly format clocks of the time. Included is a selection of the DJ cuts from some of the big name players in the Digamae group...weren't they all? Listen closely for John O'Donnell's mis-pronounced ID: John O'Dale! and right at the end is a curious out-take by the PAMS Singers. Runs 3.15, file size approx 3mb.

TM Productions/Digamae Australian ID package
By 1973 the Digamae programming juggernaut was leading the charge on music radio in Australia. Their people loved nothing more than to head over to the US and cut a new set of IDs for hungry stations back home. This custom set with instrumentation recorded in Dallas in December 1973 and premiered on 2SM, 3XY, 2NX and 2NM on New Years Day '74. Other stations followed. At one point this package was heard through the old Transcontinental Network in NSW (2KA, 2KM, 2LF, 2LT). Tassie got it via 7HO and 7EX, so too Perth on 6KY. I believe it was KY's last 'pop' package prior to switching on the Beautiful Music format in 1976.

And if all of this isn't enough, you'll hear at the end of the medley Digamae's presentation demo aimed at regional stations in 1974. The demo uses the 2LT versions and is voiced by former creative director of Digamae John Torv. Runs 5.00, file size approx 5mb.

Welcome to ROCKTOBER
Rocktober is the perennial programming concept created in 1974 by John Torv for the Digamae group of stations: 2SM, 2NX, 3XY and 6PM. Another two stations: 4IP and 2CC added Rocktober to their schedules in 1975 and 1976 respectively.

Check out page 194 of “DTTD” where John (Jaan to his family) gives his account of how he came up with the idea and some of the work behind the scenes of that first Rocktober over 30 years ago.

Meantime click away at the links below and enjoy the sounds as Rocktober rolls over once more.
